Helpful Notes About the Competition

Pre-Competition:
All applications are to be complete by the required deadlines or points will be deducted. This is an excellent task for the halau alakai or parents to handle. A major portion of the application process requires submitting recent head shots of the participants, and providing information about the haumana and kumu, e.g. name, address, age, etc.

The other required information pertains to the kumu hula’s creativity, e.g. description of the costumes and adornments, words to the songs, etc. Alakai or parents can assist by completing and submitting the written forms, thus allowing the kumu to concentrate on the research and the creative process.

Complete all applicable applications and requirements for each participant by the required deadlines. Complete applications in pen and print legibly to ensure Xeroxed copies are readable. Copies of the haumana’s palapala will be compiled into a binder and sent to the judges one month before the competition. It is highly recommended that the halau’s paperwork meets the deadline so that it can be included in the judge’s binder. Points will be deducted for non-adherence to deadlines. No paperwork will be given to the judges after the book is sent to judges.

Use only Hula O Na Keiki forms and only if necessary, attach addendums. Let's keep paperwork to a minimum.

There will be no duplication of auana and palua kai/hoi and main songs in its own category.  This means that a song chosen as a kai/hoi, cannot be duplicated as a kai/hoi, but it can be used as a main mele by another halau.  First come, first serve, so submit your applications ASAP.  Calling to reserve your mele is permitted.

Headshots of each contestant and kumu must accompany the applications and will be used in the printed program and other PR material. Photos or JPEG digital files (preferred) of at least 600 dpi is perferred.

Start early to reduce last minute stress. Remember, points will be deducted if applications are not received by the deadline. The palapala requirement accounts for 5% of the overall points.

Interview:

Interviews begin Friday morning in the Manao Room. Arrive early and get settled. Interviews tend to run overtime, so coach your kids to be prepared to share their manao in a timely manner. The haumana should be prepared to do a presentation of their costume, lei, knowledge of their hula and process they experienced before the competition. At least one halau representative may be present in the interview, but it is not necessary. Palua participants will not be judged in the interview but it is recommended that they be present.

The haumana should be well versed in all mele. Prepare the haumana by rehearsing and practicing their presentation. The judges will ask questions to determine the haumana’s understanding of their hula, adornments, mele and culture.

Bring costumes and a sample of the lei/adornments to the interview. Costumes should be on hangers and judges will ask to see the adornments outside of plastic bags or plastic containers. Ti-leaf skirts will need to be unrolled. Haumana will be asked to describe the adornments and its significance. There will be a display table at the Interview session.

No additional paperwork can be given to the judges during the interview.

Practice keeping your entire halau's interview to 20 min.  The judge's will be very conscious of the time to minimize waiting time for all halau.

Rehearsals:
Stage placement rehearsals are usually scheduled after the interview session. An Interview/Rehearsal Schedule will be issued. If you will be using the House Band, make arrangements to have additional rehearsals.

Competition:
You will be notified of your performance time(s) before the competition. On competition day, plan to arrive in the holding area at least 10 minutes early. Refreshments will be provided backstage.

Points may be deducted if a performance is out of order. Competition day is always hectic and exciting. Try to keep your haumana calm and focused.

Halau Ticket information:

Kumu and competition haumana do not need tickets to enter the competition room. However, although their name tag allows them into the room, it allows seating in General Seating only.  It does not allow a seat in Reserve Seating with halau without a paid reserve ticket.  Musicians and halau kokua will enter and exit from backstage only. If they want to watch the competition, they must purchase a ticket.

All others must have a ticket. Halau rates for tickets will be available. Call the Ohana Fun Center @ 808-667-0129 to reserve tickets

Other Activities:

Artisans from all over the state will be prominently stationed throughout the courtyard sharing their fine works of jewelry, clothing, Hawaiian implements, and accessories.
